Overview

As a founding product designer at WeVidIt, I conducted market and user research to gain an understanding of the film and tv industry and created user flows to guide design solutions in collaboration with an outsourced design team.

Problem

For decades, the film and TV industry has always lacked diversity, equity, and inclusion to create equal and stable opportunities for aspiring and emerging talent. During my time at WeVidIt, my team and I attempted to address the following problems:

  • Aspiring and rising content creators have difficulty breaking into the film and TV industry
  • Original ideas are not protected, thus, being prone to plagiarism
  • Studios struggle to find the right talent to recruit for film and tv production

Market Research

I researched what creators such as directors, writers, and actors are currently facing and what existing products benefit them to work efficiently in film production.

Although underrepresented communities such as women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities, are beginning to receive recognition for their talent, they are still trailing behind in the film and TV industry. Since 2019,

  • 2.1 out of 10 film directors are women
  • 2.5 out of 10 film writers are people of color
  • 14 of 61 LGBTQ characters in top films are underrepresented
  • 2.3% of speaking characters were depicted with a disability
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

I researched at least 15 existing products that help aspiring and experienced filmmakers work efficiently in film production, and studios and distributors gain consumer demand data in the market to diversify the film and entertainment industry. Such companies include The Black List, Studio System, Studiobinder, and Tableau. This intensive research helped me get a gist of how WeVidIt can better serve its users. I prepared a perspective map for my team to show a visual representation of where WeVidIt stands against its competitors.

User Flows

I researched how users on crowdsourcing companies such as Kickstarter, StartEngine, and SeedInvest invest in a project and/or start a fundraising campaign.

"AS A CREATOR, I AM LOOKING TO FUNDRAISE A PROJECT"

Key Features

Based on extensive market research and competitive analysis, my team and I found that these are the key features that are important for users who are looking to invest a film project, create film projects for their viewers and gain free access to educational resources to sharpen their creativity.

PROTECT ORIGINAL IDEAS THROUGH NFT MINTING

Creators pitching their trailers can purchase NFTs to protect their original stories, allowing digital ownership on the blockchain.

Learnings

INVOLVE DEVELOPERS IN THE PRE-MATURE PHASE OF THE DESIGN SYSTEM

It is essential to involve all contributors early in the process to build a unified and cohesive design system. These contributors include developers, copywriters, visual designers, and etc.
